My lovely wife is just a teensy shaky when taking pictures. She also has
NO interest in anything except Point and Shoot. Our current camera is a Panasonic FZ30. It is very good , but a bit on the large size. She wanted a camera that would
give her good pictures and fit comfortably in a "travel purse".

We had a bias in favor of Panasonic because of two previous camera (FZ15 and FZ30), but also liked the Canon series at comparable cost and sizes. What made us pick the Panasonic over the Canon was the Canon screen had a protective cover that had to be opened so you could see the pictures. It protects the screen better, but was a little annoying when switching back and forth between taking the picture and checking the results. The pictures taken with the Canon were very good ( my daughter-in-law's camera, a Powershot SX10IS) but my wife just liked the look of the Panasonic a little better ( it was HARD to decide).

After we settled on the Panasonic, we took a series of pictures with the camera set on AI (the Intelligent Mode) and "P" mode that gives you more control over the settings. All shots were excellent , both indoors and outdoors.

They did differ a little, and I think the Outdoor shots were a little better on "P" ( truer color)and better detail in shadowed areas), but the AI setting did do a better job on indoor shots where the mix of incadescent and Fluorescent lighting can often result in poor color control. Our default will be to use "P" outside and "IA" inside.

Almost every shot was sharp. Where the anti-shake didn't completely eliminate
all blur, those shots were still good and a little attention while shooting
resulted in nearly 100% "perfect" pictures. Summing up:
I don't think you can wrong with Either Panasonic or Canon. Both are Excellent.
